iPhone X Review: The iPhone X is NOT what you eXpected

The expensive disappointment

Apple is probably the best well-known company in the world, not just for its products, but also for its prices. It’s no surprise that Apple’s products are over expensive. Seriously, airpods at 140€ (that don’t come with the smartphones), a case with a battery incorporated for 120€ and you even have to buy the fast charger as it doesn’t come in the box. Apple presented the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus (which I have already made a review of, here) amongst the real upgrade: the iPhone X. Is it worth 1300€?

DESIGN
Now, with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus we got an internally upgraded iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but this time, only in glass. The iPhone X has a major redesign: On the front of the display there’s a display and a small notch but kind of annoying. The device is practically all screen as it comes in at an astonishing 83% screen-to-body ratio (a big step up from the previous iPhones) and the small forehead only contains the sensors needed for the FaceID. The most disappointing trait of this device is the lack of the infamous Home Button... Which was a main feature in the iPhone line up. The stainless steel frame actually scratches relatively easy and a smudge fest is expected after using the smartphone because its made of glass (front and back). The back of the phone has a vertical dual camera protruding on the top back corner and there’s only the Apple logo left on the back. The smartphone feels really premium, as usual with Apple’s premium, and it’s a really small device, knowing that it has a 5.8-inch display. The X is also IP67 certified as usual with the iPhones, the difference is that the device is definitely thicker and heavier but it only comes in at 7.7mm and 174 grams. It feels really good on the hand but I’m really disappointed about the lack of a fingerprint reader. The phone comes in two colours: Space grey and silver

DISPLAY
Apple really puts an effort to try and make the best smartphone ever. We all know that Samsung makes the best displays so it’s expected that the X has traces of Samsung all over the front of the device. It has a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display so you can expect true blacks and really vibrant colours. Apple’s tweaking of the panel only made it better. However, the resolution of 1125x2436 pixels is a bit disappointing, the phone comes in at 458PPI. It’s amazing, but for 1200€ you should get more... It’s not all good about it, the notch actually cuts the content, it’s like the phone doesn’t recognize the cut-out, so it plays the video and you can’t see part of the content. I believe a software update can solve it.

PERFORMANCE
The iPhone X is the top beast when it comes to mobile performance. As I said with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, Apple also presented the A11 Bionics chip this year, which is extremely powerful, amongst 3GB of RAM and a Hexacore CPU that overclock at 2.38GHz. The smartphone handles everything you throw at it and it scores an excessive 226.000 points on ANTUTU. Multitasking could be better if the smartphone had 4GB or even 6GB of RAM. If I’m paying 1200€, I want the best...

CAMERA
Shot taken with the iPhone X
The device has a dual camera on the back. A normal 12MPx f/1.8 aperture lens and a 12MPx f/2.4 telephoto lens. It’s not the best dual camera system... I still prefer LG’s way of doing dual-cameras: a wide angle and a normal lens, the G6 has this amazing camera system (check my review here). The phone was already amazing in low-light but OIS only makes it better. But I got to say, the camera really detects true depth and allows for DSLR like bokeh shots. The back camera is also used for AR (augmented reality) as shown in the presentation.

The front camera comes in at 7MP and a f/2.2 aperture and can also be used in FaceID. The Animojis are actually a ton of fun and the face detection and tracking are spectacular. However, I got to say that I expected much more, sure I’ve not talked about the 4K60fps video recording on both cameras, but I don’t consider it much of a feature.
The smartphone scored an impressive 97 points on DxOMark, right under the Pixel 2 and sharing the second place with the Mate 10 Pro

BATTERY
Another disappointment is the battery... It’s only 2716mAh. iOS 11 contributes for great battery life but it could be a lot better... The wireless charging is a great feature of this device but I hoped the fast charger came in the box.

FINAL VERDICT

Really? 1200€? You should be ashamed Apple, I know that many people won’t agree with me when I say this but I don’t consider the X a device worth buying. I absolutely hate the way Apple leads with its smartphone, they just deliver excessively expensive devices. The notch actually is pretty annoying and the lack of a fingerprint reader feels like a step back. The smartphone has room for improvement in all departments. I consider it to be ugly and I do prefer the iPhone 8 Plus... Anyways, I can’t recommend this device to anyone...
